Millard Ayo Early Life and Education
Millard Afrael Ayo was born in Arusha, Tanzania on January 26 1986. He was the first born in a family of four children. He attended Patandi Primary School, and later Akeri Secondary School both in Arusha) and Mbezi Beach High School (Dar es Salaam).Millard Ayo didn,t do well in school. So after Form four, he decided to go to Arusha College of Electronics to become an electronic technician like his Uncles. His uncles used to fix televisions, aerials and other electrical equipments and they made really good money through the profession so he thought he could also join their trade and start making money like them. However Millard Ayo didn,t succeed in the trade.So he decided to concentrate on what he was good at and that is media.Millard Ayo had a strong passion for the media bizness. In an interview with Daily Nation, Millard Ayo said that he had been on radio since he was 13 yrs old; he won the chance to do a children’s show on Clouds FM.
In order to fully pursue his career as a radio presenter, Millard Ayo decided to enroll in East Africa Training Institute in Arusha to study broadcasting and journalism for a year. After graduating from the school, he moved to Zanzibar, joined Zanzibar Television and became a news reporter for six months.
After working with the Zanzibar television for 6 months, Millard Ayo decided to move back to Dar es Salaam where he joined a Christian radio station as a presenter for three years. Millard Ayo described his life while working as a presenter in the Christian Radio Station as “terrible” i.e. his salary was not encouraging. According to Millard Ayo, housemaids were making more money than him then. He used to get paid Tsh5,000 (Sh240) per week and would get a salary increment of Tsh5,000 per year. With that small amount of salary, Millard Ayo could only afford to rent a house in a slum called Keko Machungwa for the three years. He was living in a house that didn’t even have electricity. He would go and iron his clothes at work and sometimes even wash them there. When asked why he stayed at the Christian radio station for up to 3 yrs despite the peanut salary he was receiving from the media house , this is what he said….
I needed the experience and I knew this was an opportunity to grow my name and build my CV. I gained a lot that I wouldn’t have got anywhere else. I could produce my own shows and other technical issues.
After working for 3 horrible yrs as a presenter at the Christian Radio station and gaining a lot of experience, Millard Ayo had to move to Radio 1/ITV. That move was the beginning of Millard Ayo,s break through. At Radio 1/ITV, Millard Ayo received a salary of Tsh300,000 per month (an amount which is far greater than his yearly salary at the Christian Radio Station). In addition to the fat wallet, it was at Radio 1/ITV that the name Millard Ayo started gaining popularity in Tanzania. Millard Ayo also worked at Radio 1/ITV for three years again.
After working with Radio 1/ITV for 3 years, Millard Ayo decided to apply for a job at Clouds FM – FM 88.5 – Dar es Salaam; the biggest station in all of Tanzania. Millard Ayo long dream was to work with Clouds FM, Tanzania. He had applied to Clouds FM many times but his applications were rejected because back then he was nobody. But after working with Radio 1 and started getting traction he was asked by the Clouds Media Group to work with them. Millard Ayo moved to Clouds FM and started running an entertainment show called “Amplifier”. It was at Clouds FM that the name Millard Ayo became a household name in Tanzania.
